Key Responsibilities

• Train Operation: Drive locomotives using throttle, air brakes, and other controls; monitor gauges for speed, air pressure, etc..
• Safety & Compliance: Interpret signals, follow railroad rules, respond to emergencies, and alert others to hazards.
• Pre & Post-Trip Inspections: Check locomotives for fuel, water, sand, and mechanical issues before and after runs.
• Communication: Confer with conductors and traffic control to coordinate movement and timing.
• Documentation: Prepare reports on accidents, delays, or equipment problems; maintain logbooks.
• Cargo Awareness: Understand how freight type (e.g., hazardous materials) affects driving procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Crew Supervision: Leads and directs the train crew, including the engineer, in all train movements.
• Train Operations: Coordinates the assembly and disassembly (switching) of trains in yards, placing cars for loading/unloading.
• Safety & Compliance: Enforces all railroad rules, regulations (FRA), and procedures; conducts equipment inspections.
• Communication: Uses radios and hand signals to communicate with crew and dispatchers.
• Equipment Operation: Operates switches, applies hand brakes, and may operate remote control devices for locomotives.
• Problem Solving: Addresses mechanical issues, handles work orders, and coordinates with customers.

Core Duties

• Review & Plan: Understands train orders, bulletins, and switch lists.
• Inspect: Checks cars, couplings, air hoses, and locomotives before and during runs.
• Switching: Cuts and couples cars, throws switches to build/break trains.
• Monitoring: Observes tracks for obstructions and monitors equipment gauges.
• Direction: Gives signals and instructions (e.g., move forward, back up) to the engineer.
